Revelstoke Heritage & Museums:
Revelstoke Museum & Archives
Revelstoke Museum and Archives
is housed in the former Post
Office and Customs building,
constructed in 1926. This
beautiful, brick heritage
building has been home to the
Museum and Archives since 1974.
The collection focuses on all
aspects of the history of
Revelstoke and district. One
unique artifact is a fur press,
constructed for men's clothing
merchant F.B. Wells in 1911.
Wells bought furs from local
trappers and packed them for
shipment to buyers in eastern
Canada. Evidence of use can be
seen in penciled notations on
the side of the press. Other
artifacts, photographs and
archival materials show the
history of transportation,
mining, forestry, farming,
business enterprises and sports
and recreation. Revelstoke's
fame as a ski-jumping area is
told through photographs and
artifacts.
This year the Museum has
expanded into the second floor
of the building, with increased
display area and a new home for
the archives. A new
microfilm/microfiche
reader/printer will facilitate
research.
The collection of over 3000
photographs has been
well-indexed for subjects and
names, and a newspaper names
index is in progress, currently
covering the years 1890 to 1906.
The archives also hold city tax
assessment rolls from 1900 to
1926 as well as extensive
records for the Canadian Pacific
Railway Revelstoke divisional
office, and the records of many
community organizations.
Group tours of the Museum can be
arranged upon request. Heritage
walking tours and cemetery tours
are held several times
throughout the season. Call the
Museum for more information.
